BEST CHRISTMAS FLASH FICTION CHALLENGE EVER

00 Santa Dan
Ho, ho, ho!

If you wanna get right to the challenge skip down to where it says “FLASH FICTION CHALLENGE!”

It is Christmas time! And as most of you know, there are a lot of Christmas specials on TV.

And most of them suck.

Honestly, A Mom For Christmas? Look, I liked Olivia Newton John as much as anybody back in the day, but who needs to see that?

Nobody.

But throw in a few desperate B-list stars and some drunk, unemployed writers and BINGO, another “new” cookie cutter holiday story. Even if they’ve redone it a dozen times over the years.

Yawn.

This is YOUR chance to change all that!

It occurred to me that a bored person with a computer could probably do better than these TV executives! And, hey, WE have computers! And alcohol! Plus, doing this challenge is better for YOU than shopping/decorating the tree/spending time with the in-laws.

FLASH FICTION CHALLENGE!

Did you see that coming? So here’s the deal. First of all you go to this website

http://www.kitt.net/php/title.php

And get six titles. Pick ONE to build your Christmas Themed Flash Fiction story around.

The definition of flash fiction is: whatever you want it to be. So sayeth Wiki:

“Flash fiction is a style of fictional literature or fiction of extreme brevity.[1] There is no widely accepted definition of the length of the category.”

Basically I’m looking for something around 1000 words. It can be less, it could be more. If you’re closing in on 3000 words and you haven’t really nailed it yet, think about some editing. Funny, romantic, erotic, mystery, drama, that’s your call. (Keep it PG if you post it below; if you go R or harder, just the link will do.)

THE RULES

  1. You write 1000 words more or less on the now-Christmassy topic
  2. Post it on your blog
  3. Reference us on your blog and this challenge so your regular readers don’t think you’ve gone batty.
  4. Post your link to your story here in the comments section.
  5. You have until Friday 12 noon EST, on 12/18/2015, that’s Tampa Florida US of A time, for those of you who live elsewhere.

Here’s a bonus for reading to the bottom. IF you participate in THIS challenge, you will get a few days’ advantage for the NEXT writing challenge! Yeah, that’s it. I can be Grinchy sometimes. Ask around.

READ the entries by everybody and let me know which ones you like. That could influence the judging. Just sayin’. We’re not giving prizes. The display of your amazing talent is its own reward.

GET AFTER IT!

Good man! Guess I’d better get writing then Shame I have to be sober but that’s a long, long story I’ll maybe write one day. Thanks for putting out these challenges Dan as no doubt you can tell I really enjoy doing them and they get folk coming to my blog … no bad thing! Cheers!

Hey, I have a friend who nearly killed herself with alcohol this year – a young professional woman who let it overtake her to the point she lost her job, almost lost her kids and house, and landed in a treatment facility where she lived for 90+ days. So please understand that when I joke about alcohol, I’m joking but I understand the non-humorous side of it all.

If these challenges drive people to your blog, that’s a good thing!

If you enjoy them, that’s great! I’ll be fine tuning them for January. I’m getting a feel for what you guys like. The more of a challenge, the higher the interest. So the newer ones in the new year should be better.

No problem … you got wrong end of the stick with me … never ever drunk much yet in 2011 for a still unknown reason my body took it upon itself to reject my liver and lets just say things got dark (well very yellow actually)then by some miracle I recovered while awaiting an emergency transplant and now with immune suppression I’m almost normal! (as normal as this Brit can be!). I’ll be seeing my world class liver specialist in London next week as I do twice a year and he’ll smile shake his head and as he always does to his juniors say ‘ meet a miracle’ … as I say a story to be told someday. No more of this ok my friend.

That title generator is stocked with pure evil. Fun! It did give me “The Night’s Elves” which is fortuitously topical. Alas, I am not going to use it as another title that I will probably regret told me that it was mine instead. (Hey y’all, have a free title, quick, while Dan’s not looking!)

I have “Shards of Obsession”. I’m going to do something slightly twisted with it. I’m going to write it as an offshoot from Lightning Attraction. It will feature Lisa, Jessie’s best friend, and (here’s the genius part) will feed into a subplot in Lightning Attraction 2!!

Like I said… twisted!

I’ll need a couple of hours though because I just got home from work (5pm here).

oops, missed that question! I think Total Fiction was probably my favorite. I wish I had the graphic design/photo shop experience to really pull off the image I have in my head with the pieces of book blowing away, though. Would be so cool. 🙂

😀 Excited I am. 🙂 Would you like me to do anything to help out at this juncture? (I wrote a sentence here which came across entirely wrong. I have now deleted but have no idea how to reword it. haha) If you think of something you’d like help with, let me know.

What did you turn into Yoda? (That, I can handle, just not Jar Jar Binks)

Yes, we should probably be doing something. I’m gonna do a test on Google ON Air soon, so newcomers can familiarize themselves how that works. We should decide on criteria for the super blog and figure out how to work the anthology… Basically, everything needs to be done.
