Friday FUN Time!

I like a burger cooked on a charcoal grill the best, some American cheese melted on that sucker – and usually nothing else. Sometimes mustard, occasionally a mayo-ketchup pairing (no mustard then). That’s about it. No Lettuce, no tomato, no pickle – I want a burger, not a salad.

The classics: ketchup, mustard, pickle. I usually don’t care for white onions, so I leave those off. I also prefer cheddar cheese.

Having said all of that, though, the best burger I have ever eaten was at Dyer’s on Beale Street in Memphis. I kid you not, it was cooked in 100-year-old grease (they filter it every night), and topped only with mustard and white onions. That’s how they serve their burgers unless you ask for something different and I figured I would go with it and see what I thought. I would go eat that burger again right this minute.

Isn’t that funny? The same thing happened to me at a place in Tallahassee. I was there on business, for some kind of convention or something, and we had a free night. The lady at the hotel front desk recommended the place. That was the first time I ever had seasoned french fries that were like batter dipped or something and the flames coming off the grill caused by the grease on the burgers was four or 5 feet high. But I did what you did, I said give me one of whatever you’re famous for, and I was over the moon. Maybe the best burger I’ve ever had.

Let’s see; no mustard, but like the veggies (lettuce, tomatoes with a dill pickle on the side). I love onions, but they don’t like me, so I usually leave them off. A sharp cedar is better than American and oh yes, don’t forget a couple strips of bacon. Mmmm.
