Book Launch Party UPDATE (for my friend Nathan’s book – but read it cos there’s good info you need to know!)

I updated my earlier post about a launch party on Facebook I was attending/guest hosting/featured guesting tonight. Here’s the earlier stuff, followed by an update – where it says UPDATE

Nathan Van Coop’s book came out today and he’s hosting a Facebook launch party – for which I will be appearing in about 10 minutes.

You can hop over and chat with me there, and win some cool stuff, too! (This link will stay active for quite a while after the party ends.)

Just as important, I’ll be learning how these work by attending as a co-host or whatever I am (Featured Guest), and YOU can learn by attending. Let’s see what all the hoopla is about so we can do these for OUR books!

See ya there! Stop by and say Hi!

Okay, so my shift just ended. Actually, it ended about 30 minutes a go, maybe more.

The verdict?

I’d do it again, and all of you should, too.

The host was Nathan Van Coops, and he and I have run into each other at local book promotion stuff, so I knew him a little. Nice guy, hard worker. His books get LOTS of reviews, so I wanted to stay on his radar. When he asked me to join his launch party, I accepted immediately. Then I wondered what the heck I was supposed to do.

Well, here is the line up and some of the stuff he had going on. Skim through it and I’ll see ya at the bottom.

Yeah, that’s a LOT of stuff!

I’ll ask Nathan later, because I’m pretty sure he’s running on pure adrenaline right about now, but he said the success of the launch lies in the preparation. I can see that just from the guest list.
Each guest has to be signed up and they have – hopefully – a following. That’s the biggest thing as far as I can tell.

More people at the party

= better party

= better launch.

Meanwhile, his book went from pretty good ranking in preorders to really good ranking to #1 in some categories. So I’m sold. I’ll do book launches.

The question is, HOW to do the setup right so it goes off well?

What’s the key? Or keys?
  • Well, getting LOTS and LOTS of people – author people – to be guest hosts is one key, and
  • having nice prizes to give away is another key, and
  • the third key is promoting the heck out of it.
There are different ways to promote and to give prizes, and some aren’t free, but we’ll get into that later – after I get Nathan to tell me his secrets.
Meanwhile, he admits the best way to do one of these for your book launch is to be a guest host for a few other people’s book launches. And I can see that, because I learned a lot being a guest host, but I can see assembling the guest list was probably lot of work, and so was the promoting before hand.

What did I have to do?

  • It took an hour of my time tonight, but I think I got some good exposure as guest host (it’s Nathan’s night, remember).
  • I was working hard to get people involved. BUT!
  • I should have invited everybody WAY earlier. Lesson learned. They have a button to help you invite your friends; I should have invited everybody days ago or maybe last week.
  • That said, I got the 3rd highest guest host comments

But all in all, it starts with a great book – yours – and the desire to put in the effort to make it successful.

That means coming out of your little writer mole hole, and making talky talk on the internet with people types. You can do that. Probably. And if you can’t, maybe I can serve as master of ceremonies for a small fee. You’ve seen me work a crowd on my video show, Writers Off Task With Friends. (Haven’t you?) I know you can master this. And as always, we’ll help.

So? Have you done of one these, or guest hosted, or attended a Facebook author book launch party? Give me your thoughts!

    • I think Nathan puts a lot into everything. He’s that kind of guy.

Just guessing, I think he lined up authors who write time travel because he does, and he worked hard to get to be an admin of a GoodReads time travel fiction group so he could find authors like this.

The result is his book is #1 right now in one of its categories, and rising fast on Ammy overall. It was 500 overall earlier. That’s not bad.
