4 Guerilla Tactics For New Authors

You want a loyal fan base, but Aaaauuuuuugh! Until you are established, it’s crazy hard to do.

Crazy hard!
Crazy hard!

Don’t pull your hair out, Binkie. I’m here to help.

#1. Pay attention when people write to you about how much they loved your book, a story on your blog, a Facebook post, a retweet, etc. Make a list (I’m big on lists.) Ask for their email and send them a PDF of one of your books. Even if you have to mail them a paperback – and usually you won’t, but if you do, go ahead and sign it – you’ll spend a few bucks but they’ll probably review ALL your books. (Keep mailing costs down: http://tinyurl.com/mza5z76) Now you have a fan to help spread the word whenever you ask. And you will have to ask; they won’t think to do it on their own. It takes time, but with 100 loyal fans, each new book launch starts with a bang.

#2. Kindle Countdown Deals tend to work best when the price rise is steeper. A countdown at $0.99 for 2 days then $1.99 for 2 days then $2.99 for 2 days and ending at $3.49 earned $112 during the promo period. A second promo for the same book started at $0.99 for 5 days with a visible impending increase to $3.49. It earned $257.

That would be more, wouldn't it?

#3. To get reviews for your new book, leave a comment on each of the reviews from existing books. Tell them that you’d love for them to review your new book, too. Amazon will send an email to them about the comment. If they liked the first book enough to review it, they are very likely to review the new book. Give it to them if necessary (see #1).

#4. Newbies think they don’t have much to offer other authors, but you’ve gained valuable experience just writing your book, or publishing it, or trying to find a cover artist, etc. Write insightful posts on Facebook and your blog about things that worked or things to avoid. Help other authors avoid the abyss – like what I’ve done right here. Then, ask: These tips will help you avoid the pitfalls that new authors usually fall into; would you be willing to spend a minute to download my free/99 cent/whatever book and leave a quick review?

People respond very kindly to posts like this. Once you get in a habit, you’ll see reviews on the rise. And there are plenty of author book sites on FB to post them. Here are two:

Books Books Books Books Books! for authors readers writers and book lovers

Indie Author & Artist Xchange – your GO TO for free and discounted eBooks

When you join them, usually FB will prompt you with a few more. Join, and don’t just advertise your book, be strategic and earn loyal fans.
