3 Ways To Use That Restless Energy The Day Before Your First Book Comes Out

The day you publish your book is special – and so is the day before that.

Tomorrow is a special day. Tomorrow, your book comes out – you will be a published author. People who don’t know you, who have never met you, and who may never meet you, are going to buy your book and enjoy it. That is a special day for any author. Relish that, Binkie.

Today is special in a different way.

Today is a day of anticipation, of curiosity, of excitement, of mystery. You are brimming with excitement. It’s worth it to take a moment sometime this afternoon or this evening and write down how you feel right now. It doesn’t even have to make sense; it may never be read by another human being except you. But there are two big benefits to doing it.

1. The first is, you may want to look back on this day of anticipation. At some point in the future it might be fun to see how you were feeling today and remember it. Like a message written to you in the future from you in the past.

2. The second reason is, it’s a very exciting day so you are feeling that excitement, and you should write it down so that if you ever have a character who is in a position to be really looking forward to something or very much in anticipation of something, you can draw on these words that you write today to flesh out that character. It will seem real to people in a way they won’t be able to describe.

We all just talk and act a little bit differently when we’re excited and it’ll show in the words. Use that. File it away for future reference.

Even if you think it’s silly, do it. It’s a great idea.

Today is kind of a unique experience that non-authors really wouldn’t understand.

So, you know, I do.

Tomorrow’s a big day. Things will be different from tomorrow on. Maybe only a little, but it’ll still be different.

Today’s a big day, too.

So enjoy it. It’s probably been a long time since that strange, happy feeling in your belly prevented you from falling asleep the night before Christmas.

And Christmas is tomorrow.

3. Yeah, it’s kinda like that, isn’t it? (That’s the third thing, a little taste of childhood joy, shared. You’re welcome.)

Don’t worry that non-authors don’t get it; they’re not in the club. We understand.

See? It’s different already.
