I am thrilled to have been invited to participate in the “Death & Damages” box set anthology with a stable of talented bestselling authors like the one you are about to meet.
These amazing writers have graciously agreed to let my blog readers share in an exclusive interview AND get a sneak peek at the book they have contributed to the Death & Damages box set – 25 stories for 99 cents!
Today, we sit down with Kelly Hashway, author of A Vision A Day Keeps The Killer Away.
DAN: Tell my readers briefly about the story you are contributing to the Death & Damages anthology:
KELLY HASHWAY: Piper Ashwell is no stranger to using her psychic abilities to locate missing persons.

But when her father, Detective Thomas Ashwell, and his new partner enlist her help on the latest case searching for Veronica Castell, daughter of one of the wealthiest businessmen in the country, Piper struggles to piece together the clues.Piper’s only sure of one thing: Veronica is running out of time. Her kidnapper is intent on collecting his ransom and disposing of Veronica. This time, Piper’s visions might not be enough to bring Veronica home alive.
What inspired this story?
I’ve always been intrigued by psychic abilities, and in my research I learned about psychometry, which is the ability to read the energy off objects. I was so fascinated by it, I just had to write a character with the same ability.
How long of a piece is it?
A Vision A Day Keeps the Killer Away is a full-length novel and book one in the Piper Ashwell Psychic P.I. series.
Tell me a little bit about you. Where do you do your writing?
I’m a former English teacher turned author. I spend about eight hours a day at my laptop in my office, either writing or editing. (I’m a freelance editor as well.)
What does writing success look like to you?
Success is when readers email me to tell me how much they loved my book. Nothing beats that.
Do you ever collaborate with others?
I have not yet collaborated with anyone other than doing boxed sets. I admit I’m probably not the best person to co-author with since I tend to write insane amounts at a time. I’m very strict with myself and would probably drive a co-author to want to hit me over the head with his/her laptop.
Tell me a little bit about your process. What is the path from idea to finished story? Do you use critique partners? Do you have a favorite editor?
This series is very different for me because I start with the book titles. All of the titles in this series are based on common phrases. I then take that phrase and adapt it to my MC’s psychic ability. From there, I create a case that would suit the title and those abilities. I like to do some plotting upfront, but since my characters have minds of their own, I stray from my planning quite frequently.
I have trusted beta readers and a few editors I love to work with. I rely on their feedback to make the books the best they can be.
What do you do for your cover? It’s always hard to find a good cover. How do you find yours, or the artwork?
Red Umbrella Designs is doing all the covers for this series. I found her through another boxed set I participated in. She’s been absolutely fantastic to work with. I give her my vision, and she makes it even better.
What about your blurb and tagline? What is your process for arriving at a really killer tagline and then a blurb that makes readers want to buy the book?
Blurbs and taglines are always tricky. I draft so many before I find the ones I like, and even then I tweek them repeatedly.
About The Author
Kelly Hashway fully admits to being one of the most accident-prone people on the planet, but that didn’t stop her from jumping out of an airplane at ten thousand feet one Halloween. Maybe it was growing up reading R.L. Stine’s Fear Street books that instilled a love of all things scary and a desire to live in a world filled with supernatural creatures, but she spends her days writing speculative fiction and is a USA Today bestselling author. Kelly is also USA Today bestselling romance author Ashelyn Drake. When she’s not writing, Kelly works as an editor and also as Mom, which she believes is a job title that deserves to be capitalized.

Great interview, Dan. I think RL Stine and also Stephen King influenced most of us.
