Bullshit contests are bullshit, and hard work pays off. I have an author friend I admire greatly for being a role model of this.

Yes, actually, I like that quote a lot. It’s ability and the hard, honest work that follows that counts; and if it’s there, rewards will come naturally. I spent two years working at my photography and entering a county fair competition with little positive results, but I felt my work was equal. Then, the third year, the hard work and the learning paid dividends with seven of my 11 entries winning awards.
So keep pushing if you are confident in and honest about your ability, whether it’s with the pen — well, typewriter; well, word processor — or another artistic tool ! Don’t be faint ! 🙂
