I think there’s an obligation to the reader too, otherwise it’s purely self-indulgence. As Zadie Smith puts it, ‘Self-expression? Go and ring a bell in a yard if you want to express yourself.’ But writing involves internalising that obligation to the reader and using it in your own way. Maybe that’s what Capote is getting at.
