Hmm. Well I guess this was meant for writers. The next book they’re writing is the best book they have ever written. Meaning they have continued to learn and improve so each book they write is better than the last.
I had not thought about applying that as a reader. That’s definitely true. Occasionally you’ll get a lemon from somebody who is supposed to be good and often I’ll look at a book just want to pass after a few pages.
I’m writing my second ‘His & Her’ story as I finish the first – so yes -plenty lessons learn’t – not least from posting excerpts and working with a professional editor as I go who just happens to be a multi-award winning short story writer.
Oh, I think my first book and early works are definitely different and more fun than some other stuff, and The Navigators might be my best story overall where fans are concerned, but Poggi is my fave, and Angel is probably the best written. So far. The Water Castle is a terrific story that will blow them all away. But each is different and each has a different audience. I’m not gonna disagree with a fan that says my first book was my best!
I am not sure about the next book being a writer’s best. I much prefer many authors earlier works to their later ones. I sometimes feels as if they have run out of good ideas and just write anything.

I think that depends on the point of view. I have readers who still swear my first book is the best thing I ever wrote.
