Sometimes I’m writing and I say to myself, what would the reader REALLY NOT see coming? Can I make that happen? Does it work? Does it make the story amazing?
If the answers are yes, then I do it. And often I’m surprised at how well it turns out. Readers are knock-their-socks-off surprised, and they love it.
Absolutely agree with Frost’s philosophy!
Sometimes, when my written characters take over and pleasure me too much, this basic truth gets temporarily lost. I have to reread and think, ‘But would a reader laugh, cry, be startled, get angry?’ or am I the only one with those reactions because I love these guys so much?? 🙂 I love writing!
That’s a good point. I think when we are in a certain mood we choose words accordingly. When we’re not in that mood, we try to choose the words, but when we are in that mood, they are the only words we can use. I think readers pick up on it and I think it makes a difference.

Agree. I’ve shed loads of tears, and I hope my readers will too. Surprises have snuck up on me and hopefully on the readers too.

I think this is true. The emotion by the writer is reflected in the words.
