Hello, I’m Chastity And I Am A Blind Writer

dan
your humble host

Occasionally on the blog we feature other writers with tips you need. Here, we have another extraordinary guest blog post that I think you’ll find truly inspiring.

Here’s Chastity.

Hello to all who read this.

My name is Chastity and I am a blind writer.

…well, maybe I should say typer as I use the computer for any sort of writing.

I have been asked several times how I, as someone who is blind, can use a computer?

Well, it actually is pretty simple. I use a regular computer just like what you might be reading this on right now.

ย

The keyboard is no different and neither are the programs used to operate the computer itself.

The only thing I have different is a program called a “screen reader” or some call it “text to speech” software.

This program, once installed, reads aloud everything on screen that is text-based such as every letter I type, emails, web pages, documents and more. The only thing it doesn’t work with are pictures/graphics as those are assigned numbers in computer code, so it may read something like “graphic 286” but it can’t tell you what the picture is. There are some programs that aren’t compatible with such technology, but that’s true in all types of software programs.

Now, you may wonder: What this all has to due with writing?

Well, I’ve been writing either in braille or on computer ever since I was small, rather a long time, and am now working on my first novel to publish.

I have tried several writing groups in the past, but received either few comments, very nasty stuff, or been asked why I was there in the first place if I’m blind. With this, I have basically given up on showing my work to anyone and my family doesn’t even want to read anything, either.

I also struggle with depression, and there are some days I take things too hard. I am also a 3-time transplant recipient, making things/finding energy to write difficult.

Then, I recently discovered this site by Mr. Dan Alatorre and after messaging a couple times, he has unbelievably offered to post something on his site for me in hopes that someone would be willing to read some of my book and give me some feedback.

Yes, I know about the writing group, but when you live on a fixed income, it becomes very difficult to find extra money to spend on much of anything. Needless to say, this entire process has been on my own, with little/no help from anyone, and rather lonely.

If there is anyone that would like to read some fantasy fiction and give me some feedback, I would really appreciate it!

I have an editor and publishing company, but I would, a bit apprehensive about trying this again, like to get some ideas from other people first.

The book is young adult fantasy and is about a half-elven girl who is forced to leave her homeland by her own people because they fear her growing magic, which she is unable to control. She must learn to overcome her mistrust of the other races in order to live long enough to reach the hidden magical land where she hopes someone can train her to control her power before someone gets injured or even killed. However, unknown to her, the Darkness seeks to capture or kill her for it knows she is the Chosen of this time that can defeat its growing power and claim the ancient blade of forbidden power.

I want to extend my extreme thanks and gratitude to Dan for putting this on his site. If anyone has any questions or would like to contact me, please visit my writing website at:

My appologies as I know it doesn’t have much in the way of pictures to make things look visually pretty, plus I’m not sure how to put any up there either.

Gang, I know we have more than a few people who will step up and help.

That’s what we do here.

If you want to contact me about reading Chastity’s story, I’d be happy to arrange it.

Good for you, Dan! I have zero time to beta-read at present, but I want to tell Chastity DO NOT GIVE UP! You have already overcome challenges much more daunting than writing and publishing a book. You can DO this! When your depression threatens to overtake you, try to remember that you can’t believe everything you think (except for your positive thoughts, of course – always believe those) ::smiling::

I am sorry you ran into some truly hateful people in those writing groups (FaceBook, perhaps?), but here in blog-land we are a supportive group of kind souls who would never step on the dream of another writer. Bloggers are kind and uplifting, for the most part. Even though most of us are fairly swamped with to-dos and can’t comment nearly as often as we’d like, we do take the time to ring in when we can, and to read and “like” the writings of others.

Your WIP (Work in Process/progress) sounds truly wonderful. More to the point, your description is excellent. There are published writers who struggle writing their blurbs, so it’s clear you have some writing talent. I look forward to following your progress and will be rooting for your HUGE success.

Thank you Dan for posting this as I have now come across a site with well written and thoughtful poetry which create images in my mind. I am following Chastity now and hope to read many more of her ‘a poem in verse’ … the two posted ‘Dragon Sworn’ and ‘Star-Child’ I would recommend to all to read, I will be letting my ‘poetic friends’ know that Chastity’s site is out there. I too think the book blurb is well written and effective; I’m struggling to write mine! I don’t know the genre well enough to give useful beta read feedback but as you said I’m sure there are many out there who would and no doubt will. Eric.

You have a kind heart Mr. Dan. ๐Ÿ™‚ I have no doubt a few readers will be happy to read Chastity’s work. I’m drowning in edits now and once again, this is not my genre. But Chastity should be so proud of herself for everything’ s she’s accomplished.
And I have one other thing for Chastity: Don’t let anybody crush your dreams or your vision. There are many of us writers (like myself) who have not much support or encouragement from the people closest to us in our lives. We are writers, a different lot. Only other writers can truly understand the passion of another writer. Hang around supportive people, writing friends, bloggers, writing groups on Facebook where others are there to help lift others, not knock them down and you will find a whole new world of refuge open up. ๐Ÿ™‚
