from A Moveable Feast
Sometimes when I was starting a new story and I could not get it going…
“Do not worry. You have always written before and you will write now. All you have to do is write one true sentence. Write the truest sentence that you know.”
So finally I would write one true sentence, and then go on from there. It was easy then because there was always one true sentence that I knew or had seen or had heard someone say.
…I found that I could cut that scrollwork or ornament out and throw it away and start with the first true simple declarative sentence I had written.

Going for a nice walk also helps.

To a pub?

Could be dangerous. I might forget about writing altogether if I did that. Cake shop first, if that doesn’t work – then pub!

How do you feel about chocolate with fruit and nuts?

I am very much in favour of chocolate with fruit and nuts, especially nuts. Right now I could eat chocolate with anything, I am having one of those days!

I’ve been stuck before, many times. For me it doesn’t help to focus on it. I usually need to get away from my story, go out,go somewhere for a walk or do something new, different, basically forget about the story – next day I’m typing like crazy 😀

Good call. Whatever works, right?

I keep my Writers Block by the fireplace, alongside my Captain’s Log.
If I run out of wood then I’ll chuck ’em on. Cheers Dan. 🍻 🎂

I am always quick to point that out, too, whenever somebody tells me about Hemingway. Don’t forget, he did kill himself!
