Stephen King Memes Contest

on writingI read another great article on Stephen King and stole the best parts (hey, the writer stole them from King’s book “On Writing” anyway, so fair’s fair).

Here they are. If you create a meme from them, a little picture and maybe Mr. King’s image, I’ll post it here and tweet about it on Twitter to my over 12,000 followers. Have at it. You can do one or all of them, and the best one wins a prize. Post your finished meme somewhere like your blog and then send the link to me via the Contact Me button.

“The most important things are the hardest things to say. They are the things you get ashamed of because words diminish your feelings.” – Stephen King

Writing is refined thinking.” – Stephen King

“Paragraphs are almost always as important for how they look as for what they say.” – Stephen King

“The object of fiction isn’t grammatical correctness but to make the reader welcome and then tell a story.” – Stephen King

Description begins in the writer’s imagination, but should finish in the reader’s.” – Stephen King

“In many cases when a reader puts a story aside because it ‘got boring,’ the boredom arose because the writer grew enchanted with his powers of description and lost sight of his priority, which is to keep the ball rolling.” – Stephen King

“There’s a difference between lecturing about what you know and using it to enrich the story.” – Stephen King

Bad writing usually arises from a stubborn refusal to tell stories about what people actually do.” – Stephen King

“I’m convinced that fear is at the root of most bad writing.” – Stephen King

“Use the time of a total stranger in such a way that he or she will not feel the time was wasted.” – Kurt Vonnegut

“The first draft of a book — even a long one — should take no more than three months.” – Stephen King

“Once I start work on a project, I don’t stop, and I don’t slow down unless I absolutely have to.” – Stephen King

“If I don’t write every day, the characters begin to stale off in my mind … I begin to lose my hold on the story’s plot and pace.” – Stephen King

Oh, and the reason I selected these quotes is because they apply to my writing bad habits and probably yours, too, so expect to see them again.

Okay, get busy!

I’m not a ‘Meme’ person, so I will gracefully bow out of the contest…

Stephen King’s “On Writing” was the first book I read when I started writing. Who better to learn from, right? (Sorry, I didn’t know you yet…)

I don’t remember this quote, but I wish I had! I think I need to post this by my laptop so I won’t forget again. Not really a bad habit for me, but definitely a problem!
